In more ways than one, this Northlanders installment brings everything full circle. This is also the final Northlanders story, the longest story, and probably the largest in scope.

I created Northlanders in 2006. In an effort to explain my basic concept for the book to the people at Vertigo (which was difficult; this series is a tough sell and an anomaly, format-wise) I branded it a crime book. Vikings as criminals, as organized criminal gangs. Which is, of course, exactly what they were and thats why a “viking crime story” is such an obvious, no-brainer high concept.

Holy shitwow, Massimo Carnevale’s cover for Northlanders #37 is outstanding. The first of a 3-issue arc retelling to story of the Viking siege of Paris, out this Wednesday, 2/9/11. Simon Gane is doing pencils/inks, with the always amazing “Zombie” Dave McCaig on colors. CBR has a preview of some inked pages. If you haven’t given this series a chance, I highly recommend it. Brian Wood is one of the best writers in comics.

It looks like writer Grant Morrison has another miniseries going to Hollywood. Joe the Barbarian is a series I’ve been following, about Joe, a diabetic kid who is suddenly drawn into a fantasy world where his toys and pet rat are alive and waging a war against King Death. He is the subject of an age-old prophesy as the “Dying Boy”; the fantasy world’s foretold savior. Joe is simultaneously in the real world as well, going into what seems like diabetic shock and you’re never quite sure if it’s all just delusions brought on by dangerously low blood sugar, or if they’re really happening. The whole series is 8 issues, which is currently on issue 6, and takes place over the course of what is actually only an afternoon, but several days to Joe and his comrades. It’s being drawn by the incredibly talented Sean Gordon Murphy. via CBR

This series is shaping up to be quite good. You may know I’m a fan of Allred’s pencils from his work on X-Statix and it shines here as well. It’s got a very classic silver-age look to it. The story is lots of fun, too.

I’m admittedly a big supporter of anything Brian Wood is involved in. This 2nd iteration of the Demo one-shot stories is much like the first in that it explores some hard issues like abuse, self-loathing, personality disorders, and cannibalism. And Becky Cloonan’s art makes it come alive beautifully.
